What is Tubilustrium?
In Ancient Rome, the month of March was the traditional start of the war season, and Tubilustrium was a ceremony to make the army fit for a battle. This celebration was held on March 23, and it took place again on May 23. The ceremony involved all of the sacred trumpets, or “tubae”. To “bring success” in the coming battles, the war trumpets were cleaned. In a place called the “Hall of the Shoemakers” a female lamb was sacrificed, and the Salii, twelve youths that were priests of Mars, danced through the streets. People who didn't attend the ceremony would be reminded of it by seeing the Salii dancing.
